Sci-fi short film The Long Dig is based on the role-playing game (RPG) Aeronauts and is set in a distant future in which most of the world is covered in a mysterious, purple mist.

Prolonged exposure to the mist causes hallucinations, illness, and eventual death. So, the remnants of humanity now reside either in mist-absent clearings in emerging city-states high above ground, or sequestered in tunnels beneath the earth.

The short film chronicles the adventures of the exiled Eve and her companions Laren and Shaemus as they attempt to locate pre-catalcysmic technology in order to return to their home above ground. But danger awaits them within the mist.

After London is the target of repeated terrorist attacks, the British government suffers a coup led by a mysterious organization known only as “Security Services.”

Security Services quickly puts into place drastic security protocols enabling the new government the ability to spy on every citizen via common electronic devices such as smartphones and television sets. The organization soon morphs into a totalitarian regime… but an underground resistance is forming.

Against this dire backdrop, we meet Jack Chaney, a man with a dark past who returns to the life he walked out on, searching for the wife he abandoned years ago so they can embark on a new life together off-world. But, Jack must first contend with his checkered past and face a reckoning that could jeopardize his chance for a new beginning.
