In The Sci-Fi Short Film 'Who Among Us' Contestants On A Game Show Must Prove They Are Human

January 25, 2020 by Rod T. Faulkner in Science Fiction, Short Film, Special Feature

The science fiction short film Who Among Us is…weird. But that is also what makes it a sensational watch.

Written and directed by Rebecca Kahn and Abhishek Prasad, the short depicts the grand finale of the greatest game show ever made, the fictional “Who Among Us,” which draws in over 4 billion viewers.

The game show selects six contestants from all over the world. The players are told a machine that looks indistinguishable from humans is planted among them. But here is the twist: the machine believes it is human.

The players must determine who the machine is, with the winner taking home the largest cash prize in game show history: $500 million dollars.

The short chronicles the show’s grand finale. The contestant pool has been whittled down to two finalists: Seven (Susana Borosic) and Drake (Kingsley Ngadi).

The duo must undergo a series of wacky challenges in order to prove which one of them is human and the winner of the grand prize. Guiding these proceedings is the game show’s painfully jovial host, Dr. Nadio (Terry He).

As the pressure mounts, one contestant unravels during the show, leading to an eventful and provocative climax.

Who Among Us draws much influence from two pop culture phenomena: kooky and bizarre Japanese game shows and reality television. Writer-directors Kahn and Prasad use these influences to tell a fun and offbeat narrative that slyly explores questions surrounding what exactly makes us human, as well as our collective anxieties regarding the increasingly ubiquitous role artificial intelligence plays in our lives.

Who Among Us is a strange, entertaining, and captivating science fiction short that defies categorization while offering a singular viewing experience.
