A Russian Cosmonaut Stranded In Space Makes An Unexpected Connection In The Compelling Sci-Fi Short 'Into The Silent Sea'

July 04, 2020 by Rod T. Faulkner in Science Fiction, Short Film

Written and directed by fllmmaker Andrej Landin, Into The Silent Sea is an award-winning, haunting, and poignant sci-fi short about a lone Russian cosmonaut who becomes stranded in space.

The short follows the cosmonaut, Alexander (Zack Sayenko), as he seeks to contact anyone on earth after a catastrophic systems failure leaves him without critical guidance controls or communications, save one frequency.

Eventually, he does make a connection with Alvaro (Peter Arpesella), a radio operator based in Sicily.

As Alvaro desperately tries to get a message through to the Russian government, viewers (via flashbacks) witness the byzantine events which led to Alexander being drafted into the space program during the height of the Cold War and Space Race.

Landin has crafted a beautiful and extremely affecting drama that illustrates in high relief the depth of the courage and sacrifice made by the men and women who risk their lives to travel into space.

By giving us a glimpse into Alexander’s personal background and seeing the events of his life right before he is sent into space, we are reminded of his humanity - and of just how precious and fragile life is.

Going into space, he is leaving behind his love and the only life he has ever known to embark on an incredibly dangerous journey.

Into The Silent Sea is a triumph boasting gorgeous cinematography, magnificent performances, immaculate direction, and impressive period set designs.

However, the short’s greatest narrative strength lies in its respect of the enormous courage and sacrifice inherent in space travel. It refuses to glamorize or gloss over the influence of backroom politics over the space race, nor the high cost paid by the men and women involved.

Into the Silent Sea is currently available for viewing online via the YouTube channel of short film exhibitor Omeleto.

This project deserves every award it has won and most definitely merits far more views than it has garnered as of this writing.
