Stunning Sci-Fi Short 'INVASION' Reframes Alien Visitation From A Unique Perspective

July 26, 2020 by Rod T. Faulkner in Science Fiction, Special Feature, Short Film

The stunning sci-fi short film INVASION is the latest project from visionary filmmaker Pete Majarich.

Yes, I realize using “visionary” as an adjective to describe artists is becoming almost trite, but in Majarich’s case, the descriptor is very apropos.

His previous speculative short film - The Visitor - is about a human stepping foot on Mars.

Whereas many modern science fiction stories focus on the dangers and technological everests involved in humans traveling to the red planet, Majarich took a different approach with his Martian tale.

The Visitor is a meditative narrative about a lone astronaut exploring the face of Mars and soaking in the majestic beauty of our ruddy neighbor.

With that short film, Majarich became one of our most favorite filmmakers because he has the uncanny ability to take already breathtaking vistas and infuse them with the fantastic by means of his camera and artistic perspective.

He strikes again with INVASION.

The film opens with the voiceover of a young woman, (Naomi Sequeira), recounting the date aliens began appearing on earth.

The aliens appear slowly at first, but over several months, their numbers begin growing at an alarming rate - and the young woman loses a loved one as a result of the creatures’ presence on earth.

INVASION is an arresting composition of gorgeous scenes of ethereal aliens appearing in common panoramas of daily life: in a parking garage, over the skyline of a city, and hovering over pastoral locales.

The presence of these silent, floating entities instills a deep current of fear and dread in the film’s tone that is palpable.

There is a twist near the conclusion I will not spoil. Suffice to say, unlike most twist endings, it serves to increase the emotional impact of the story in a heartbreaking and unforgettable way.

Oh yeah, here is another remarkable fact about the film: it was shot entirely on an iPhone 8!

Watch INVASION here…

INVASION is another triumph for Majarich, whose singular artistic sensibilities and vision are creating some of the most thought-provoking, gorgeous, and emotionally affecting speculative shorts available today.

He is most definitely a filmmaker to watch.
