In The Sci-Fi Short 'GILL' A Teleportation Experiment Gone Awry Tests The Mettle Of A Brilliant Scientist

April 03, 2020 by Rod T. Faulkner in Science Fiction, Short Film, Special Feature

In the award-winning, sci-fi short film GILL, the titular scientist (Caitlin Wells) is testing the capabilities of an experimental teleportation suit.

However, soon into the test, the suit begins to malfunction. Gill loses control over the frequency and duration of her “jumps,” placing her life in serious peril.

Her only companion during this harrowing experience is the disembodied voice of her male colleague (Lazarus Simmons), who is in contact with her via radio.

As Gill attempts to assess her situation and regain control of the suit, she must also deal with her irascible colleague - who doubts her abilities and vehemently insists he can solve the situation remotely.

Gill must decide whether to acquiesce to his demands for her to stop her attempts at solving the problem - or rely on herself, her knowledge, and skills in order to save her own life.

GILL was written, produced, and directed by North Carolina-based filmmaker Kieran Moreira, and the short is stunning.

Moreira uses the natural scenic beauty of North Carolina to create visually-arresting landscapes that are another character in the story. The cinematography pops, inexorably drawing you into the near-future drama of the short.

As the titular protagonist, Caitlin Wells shines as the brilliant and determined scientist embroiled in a life or death struggle.

Wells’ screen presence is undeniable.

Along with the project’s extraordinary overall production, compelling story, tense pacing, and subtle social commentary on gender power dynamics, her performance is the key ingredient that makes GILL a gripping and mesmerizing watch.
