Horror-Comedy Mashup Film 'CAMP WEDDING' Offers More Than Subversive Satire

It is rare for a full-length feature film to be written up here at The 7th Matrix. Our focus is primarily on short-form and episodic narratives, but when we heard the premise of the film CAMP WEDDING, we knew we had to make an exception.

CAMP WEDDING follows Mia, a bride-to-be who has rented for her upcoming nuptials - via Airbnb of course - the grounds of a neglected former summer camp with a dark history.

Despite the location’s storied past, Mia is insistent on her friends helping her transform the property into an Instagrammable dream venue.

Her friends are less than enthused by the entire concept as they fail in executing the overbearing bride’s meticulous and exacting plans.

Things go from bad to worse when people start to vanish, but Mia is hell-bent on having the wedding of her dreams - even if it kills her.

Written an directed by Greg Emetaz, CAMP WEDDING was inspired by the real-life summer camp wedding of executive producer Cara Consilvio.

Not just a comical subversion of genre tropes, the film also deftly examines a very timely topic: how modern communication via text messaging and social media often distorts, strains, and damages relationships.

The characters are in a remote location where cell phone service is spotty at best. Intermittent internet access, incomplete and misdirected text messages, as well as social media posts lacking context lead to comical - and deadly - shenanigans throughout the movie.

This amalgamation of comedy and horror works chiefly due to the nuanced and layered writing atypical of most genre satires.

When they first appear, the main characters seem to represent rote genre archetypes. But as the film progresses, each of them is revealed to have complex emotional lives with motivations that are relatable.

Another key to achieving this social verisimilitude is the main cast - charismatic actors whose collective chemistry together sells their onscreen friendship.

CAMP WEDDING is a fun and enjoyable film that sends-up the most iconic tropes of two genres, while also exploring the significant influence text messaging and social media has on our relationships.
