Science fiction thriller Horizon boasts one of the most gripping debut episodes I've ever seen in a web series.
The title card dissolves to present a shocking tableau - a horrifying multi-car collision. Debris and bodies are strewn across a rural highway.
The cause of the accident?
An enormous alien spacecraft has suddenly appeared over Bristol, England, throwing the city into utter chaos.
Horizon tells the story of five disparate individuals, who must band together to survive the bedlam and insanity of a city facing an alien encounter.
Like most British dramas, this web series has exceptional writing and casting.
Written by Simon Pearce, Paul Dudbridge and Chris Marshfield, Horizon offers a compelling depiction of how society might actually react if a giant UFO were to suddenly appear in the sky.
The performances of the main cast feel authentic as people coping with the disruption of society by the most pivotal event in human history.
My only criticism is the CGI used for the alien spacecraft doesn't look quite convincing. Despite this minor flaw, it is the reactions of the characters to the UFO that sells this ten episode drama.
The panic, fear, disbelief, and shock are palpable in every scene between the characters, serving to create a sense of gritty realism juxtaposed against the fantastic.

With its realistic tone, visceral performances, and sharp plotting, Horizon injects new life into the well-tread premise of first alien contact.
