A Flash Of Fun
When was the last time you watched a sci-fi film or series that was just fun?
Currently, there too many genre projects mired in grimness and solemnity. This situation is further exacerbated by the recent departure of shows with lighter tones such as Eureka and Warehouse 13.
Just as all is looking dark and dreary, along comes a project that reminds you it's okay for sci-fi to occasionally put a smile on your face.
Blast From The Past
The series centers on the exploits of bumbling scientist-adventurers Jack and Sam.
This not-so dynamic duo is joined by their friends Susan and Janet as they encounter weird mind-controlled villains, robots, and a psychedelic spatial anomaly high above their city.
In other words, OUAT1970s is a joyous blast from the past!
It's a great mix of classic sci-fi adventure and camp - 1970s style. It doesn't hurt that the entire cast has great chemistry and appeal too.
However, my biggest kudos go out to the producers, who have impressively recreated the look, feel, and sound of 70s cinema, including:
- Authentic clothing and hairstyles
- Accurate period sets and props
- A funky, kickass soundtrack (seriously, I want to buy it!)
- Glorious boxy, bulky, push-button technology straight out of an episode of the Six Million Dollar Man
In fact, the creators have coined the term "transistorpunk" to describe the retro-futuristic sci-fi tech that is an integral part of the series 70s aesthetic.
Get Your Groove On!
The first season is comprised of seven stand alone episodes that are connected as part of a greater over-arching mystery.

I completely enjoyed Once Upon A Time In The 1970s. It's a fun, sci-fi adventure romp that will make you wish for the return of shag carpets and disco!
Special Note: As of this writing, the creators have launched a Kickstarter campaign to produce season two. Please check it out, and lend this creative production your support.
